Antibiotics

Topical Antibiotics

Antibiotics are often prescribed to treat an infection topically. This means that you will apply antibiotic creams, ointments or solutions directly on the infected area. However, these treatments do not work for deep infections because they only reach the surface of the skin. Although you can purchase these over the counter, it is best to consult with your physician.

Oral Antibiotics

A second way to treat a wound infection is to take oral antibiotics to help fight the infection. Oral antibiotics work for most infections and it is important that you follow the instructions as prescribed by your physician.

Intravenous Antibiotics

The most powerful way to administer antibiotics is intravenously. This is accomplished where the antibiotic is administered through a catheter/small flexible tube into your vein directly into your bloodstream. If you require IV antibiotics for an extended period of time, you do not need to stay in the hospital the entire time. You will be set up with a special IV line so that you can be given the antibiotic at home. Some patients and/or a family member can administer the IV antibiotics at home.
