An infected wound needs to be cleaned out and dead tissue needs to be removed--this is called debridement. Also, if there is an infection, then antibiotics may be needed. Additionally, depending on how long it has been there, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be required to fully heal this wound. I would recommend that you get the wound checked out by a wound specialist as soon as possible, especially one that has hyperbaric chambers in case you need therapy.

I would recommend your dad speak to his doctor and/or wound care specialist about hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This therapy promotes healing and is effective on patients who have diabetes or other conditions that hamper wound healing.
